Abstract
Objective: Several reports have established the relationship between type I diabetes and periodontal disease in children. Because diabetes can increase the risk of periodontitis, diabetic youth need to take care of their oral condition continuously. The aim of this study was to estimate the effect of gingival index (GI) and plaque index (PI) through oral hygiene education in diabetic youth.

Methods: The diabetic youth of two general hospitals in Daegu city were selected for this study. Oral examination, questionnaire, and program of professional oral hygiene care (scaling, fluoride application, and education for tooth care) were performed in 40 diabetic youth who consented to this study in their first visit (baseline). After one month, all participants visited for identification of oral hygiene. The teeth of participants #16, #11, #31, #36 were selected as having oral hygiene conditions. GI and PI were used as oral hygiene score. The data were analyzed using SPSS 17.0 software.

Results: Both GI and PI significantly decreased by gender and selected teeth compared to baseline. In addition, greater decrement of mean GI and PI was observed in women compared to men.

Conclusion:The program of professional oral hygiene care improved oral health care in diabetic youth. Therefore, this study showed that professional oral hygiene care can be an effective program for oral health in diabetic youth.
